Rosmarinic acid is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound commonly found in plants of the Lamiaceae family, including rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), perilla (Perilla frutescens), and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis). Chemically, it is classified as an ester of caffeic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyllactic acid, and has been widely referenced in scientific literature for its structural attributes and interaction profiles in biological research contexts.

Experimental studies have examined the molecular characteristics of rosmarinic acid using in vitro and in vivo models. These studies focus on its presence within cellular environments and explore its interaction with signaling cascades, enzyme systems, and molecular regulators. Scientific research on Rosmarinic Acid primarily focuses on its intracellular mechanism centered on NF-κB, Nrf2, and AP-1, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, enzymes including acetylcholinesterase (AChE), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Academic investigations have also examined the rosmarinic acid in relation to cellular movement and adhesion, including MMP-2, MMP-9, and extracellular matrix components, as well as interleukins, TNF-related pathways, and mast cell-associated processes (Ref.).

Rosmarinic Acid, formulated in an outstanding absorption promoting formula

Enhancing the absorption of certain natural compounds with limited bioavailability has been the focus of increasing scientific interest. Among various formulation strategies, phospholipid-based delivery systems – including liposomes and pro-liposomes – have been studied for their capacity to improve the solubility and dispersion of lipophilic compounds in aqueous environments.

Liposomes are nanoscale vesicles composed of phospholipid bilayers, structurally similar to cellular membranes. Their physicochemical properties allow them to form colloidal dispersions that are suitable for incorporation into complex formulations. However, conventional liposomes often carry a net electrical charge, which may affect their colloidal stability and interaction with biological systems. Charged liposomes can be subject to faster clearance mechanisms (e.g., phagocytosis) in biological environments.

To address these formulation challenges, neutralizing surface charge has been proposed as a strategy to improve liposomal dispersion and reduce interactions with clearance pathways. One such approach includes the use of chitosan, a polysaccharide known to interact with phospholipid head groups and reduce surface charge. The resulting complexes can exhibit improved physical stability and compatibility in model systems.
