Propolis is a honeybee product with a resinous texture, it’s made from the bark and sprouts of several plants by bees. They make propolis, often referred to as “bee glue,” for several essential purposes within the hive. Here are some of the primary reasons why bees produce and use propolis:

• Sealing and Reinforcing the Hive: Bees use propolis to seal gaps and crevices in the hive. This serves as a protective barrier against drafts, rain, and other external elements. By closing openings in the hive structure, bees maintain a stable and controlled environment for the colony.
• Sterilization and Hygiene: Propolis possesses natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties useful in the hive. As a result, bees use it to coat the interior surfaces of the hive, including the walls and the entrance. This action creates a more hygienic environment by preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi, thus contributing to the overall health of the colony.
• Defense Against Predators: The sticky and resinous nature of propolis makes it an effective deterrent against invaders, such as ants or other small predators. Bees may use propolis to narrow hive entrances or create obstacles that impede the progress of unwanted visitors.

The composition and sources of propolis can vary, with different plant resins contributing to its unique properties in different regions of the world. Of all propolis types, The New Zealand propolis and the Brazilian Green propolis are the two main kinds that have been extensively studied in recent years, due to their outstanding potential related to human health.

Green propolis is a propolis variety that is made from the Baccharis dracunculifolia, a plant species native to Brazil. Bees modify the harvested resin with their enzymes, resulting in the creation of green propolis with distinct chemical compositions and beneficial properties. The particular components typically present in Organic green propolis include:

• Those derived from cinnamic acid (namely, artepillin, baccarin, p-coumaric acid and drupanin)
• Flavonoids such as caffeic acid or kaempferol

Artepillin C, is a compound that is unuique to Green Propolis, and it has been shown to modulate p21-activated kinase (PAK1) activation. PAK1 on the other hand, has been reported to be connected to NF-κB, making Artepillin C an interesting candidate for additional studies.*
