WHY GINGER EXTRACTS

Overview

Ginger is the underground rhizome of Zingiber officinale, a perennial herb in the Zingiberaceae family. Widely used as a culinary spice, ginger has also been part of traditional systems of medicine throughout Asia for centuries. The rhizome contains carbohydrates (starch), essential oils that give it a distinctive aroma, and several classes of phenolic compounds. Among these, gingerols are dominant in fresh ginger; when dried or cooked, they transform into related compounds such as shogaols and zingerone (Ref).

Ginger Extracts

Extracts of ginger concentrate its naturally occurring compounds and offer a more consistent composition than the raw rhizome. Standardisation ensures that specific phenolics, such as gingerols, are present at defined levels. In the preparation used by MCS Formulas, each capsule contains 300 mg of ginger root extract, standardised to 20 % gingerols. This means that every capsule supplies about 60 mg of gingerol compounds in a reliable, additive‑free formulation.

Phenolic compounds studied in ginger include:

  • [6]-Gingerol and [8]-Gingerol: principal components in fresh rhizome; researched in relation with cellular signalling pathways such as NF‑κB, PI3K/Akt and AMPK (Ref).
  • Shogaols: formed during drying or heating; more pungent than gingerols and also a focus of scientific investigation.
  • Zingerone, Gingerdiols and Paradols: additional phenolics that contribute to ginger’s complex chemistry and flavour profile.

These phenolics are accompanied by essential oils (e.g. zingiberene, farnesene) and micronutrients including vitamins and minerals.

Areas of Scientific Interest

Researchers have explored ginger and its phenolic constituents in a range of models and contexts. It is important to note that much of this evidence comes from cell cultures or animals and does not translate directly into clinical outcomes; human studies remain limited.

  • Cell signalling: In laboratory models, [6]-gingerol has been studies in relation to pathways involved in cellular stress and proliferation, such as NF‑κB and PI3K/Akt (Ref).
  • Metabolic pathways: Experiments in endothelial cells investigate the relation between 6‑gingerol and genes associated with energy metabolism and nitric‑oxide signalling, including PPARδ, AMPK, PGC‑1α and eNOS (Ref).
  • Brain and cognition: (Ref).
  • Gastrointestinal processes: International bodies have also reviewed ginger from different perspectives. For example, the World Health Organization and the former German Commission E have documented its traditional use in contexts such as travel and digestion. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) includes ginger rhizome among herbal substances with a well-established tradition of use for mild stomach or gut discomfort, such as bloating and flatulence (Ref.).

Fresh vs. Dried Ginger

The composition of ginger changes with processing. Fresh rhizome contains higher levels of gingerols and essential oils. When dried or cooked, gingerols dehydrate to form shogaols, which are more pungent. Many traditional recipes incorporate both forms, and research continues to study their respective properties.

Tip for more shogaols:

Our product is standardized to 20% gingerols, the main active compounds in ginger. Small amounts of shogaols naturally occur during extraction. Since gingerols are the precursors of shogaols, you can create more shogaols naturally by opening the capsule and mixing the powder with boiling water for a few minutes before consumption.

Safety and Use

Ginger is classed as a food and is generally recognised as safe (GRAS) when consumed in normal dietary amounts. Extracts used in research settings are typically well tolerated (Ref). Nonetheless, concentrated supplements should be taken responsibly; individuals who are pregnant, nursing, under medication or medical supervision should consult a qualified practitioner before use.
