Introduction on Boswellia

Boswellia extract comes from an oleo-gum resin known as frankincense, produced by a tree called Boswellia serrata that grows in dry mountainous regions of India, Northern Africa and the Middle East. Frankincense has a rich history, and was traded in the Arabian area for more than 6,000 years. Due to its special properties, the Egyptians used frankincense to purify the body during the mummification procedure. Those familiar with the Bible, will recognize frankincense as one of the gifts offered to Jesus by the three magi. Boswellia serrata is also one of the oldest and most valued herbs in Ayurveda (Indian traditional medicine), and used for centuries in Asian and African folk medicine.

Recent scientific investigations indicate that one of the most relevant group of compounds in Boswellia Serrata resin are the pentacyclic triterpenic acids called Boswellic Acids.  According to the scientific literature, one of the most outstanding Boswellic Acids is AKBA (Acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), that has been identified as the main compound responsible for the connection of Boswellia with its major health support.

While the academic and clinical findings related to its potential are numerous (nearly 1000 published studies listed on PubMed) and many are often outstanding, supporting its traditional use, inline with the European regulation, these findings cannot be addressed here.

However, we did not stop here. Instead, in order to maximize the absorption of the Boswellic Acids, we have designed a formula to also address two major bio-availability related mechanisms.

One well known “tool” known to maximize bio-availability of natural compounds such as Boswellic Acids is Piperine (4). As a result, we have included 2 mg BioPerine© providing >95% Piperine in each capsule.

The other major approach known to maximize bio-availability of natural compounds are phospholipid-based formulations. These are available commercially known as liposomal formulations and they come as liquid emulsions or solid formulations promoting the formation of liposomal structures (bubble-like structures surrounded by a fat-based layer) that can encapsulate the active ingredients such as Boswellia compounds. This phospholipid layer is similar to the cell walls in our body. As a result, liposomes are well received by the body and absorbed in higher quantities by the body, to reach the blood stream.

While liposomal formulations are a great way to deliver increased amount of supplements and drugs to the blood stream, when turning these into products, it leads to various disadvantages for the users. Liposomal products are liquid, heavy and difficult to carry. They have difficult taste. Making their taste better may come with various undesired additives. And typically they have short shelf life, even shorter after the bottle is open. Furthermore, liquid liposomal products need to stay stored at low temperature.

In contrast to the liquid liposomal supplements, liposomal promoting formulations as dry powder in capsules have no taste, they are easy to carry, and they can be stored at room temperature with a long shelf life. The quality is therefore even better since the product is more stable.

Furthermore, phospholipids can be negatively or positively charged leading to a lower absorption and time to circulate in the blood stream, compared to neutrally charged liposomes. In order to address this and further maximize the absorption, our Pro Liposomal formula includes LongLifeLipoTech™
