Astragalus is a perennial herb predominantly found in East Asian regions. Belonging to the Fabaceae family, it has been cultivated for centuries. With its scientific name Astragalus membranaceus (also called Milkvetch and Huang Qi), this plant has captured the interest of researchers and consumers alike. Traditionally used in various medicinal practices, astragalus has a rich historical background. Its root is the part most commonly utilized. Characterized by its specific botanical properties, astragalus contains a complex array of compounds such as polysaccharide, flavonoids compounds, saponins compounds and alkaloids. These compounds contribute to the plant’s unique characteristics, making it a subject of ongoing scientific exploration. Of these, Astragaloside IV is an outstanding natural component in Astragalus membranaceus, connected with many of its important properties.

On hold claims currently investigated for approval or rejection by EFSA in relation to Astragalus membranaceus are related to Immune health [EFSA ID 3735 and 3736], physical and mental well-being [EFSA ID 3255], heart [EFSA ID 3257], Joints [EFSA ID 3259 and 3260] and skin [EFSA ID 3261]*.

While the academic and clinical findings related to Astragalus membranaceus potential are numerous (more than 2000 published studies listed on PubMed) and many are often outstanding, supporting its traditional use, inline with the European regulation, these findings cannot be addressed here.
