For many years before the creation of MCS Formulas, this platform provided free, valuable health information to millions, driven purely by a genuine commitment to helping people in need, without any financial motivation (Ref.).

1. Honokiol

Honokiol is a naturally occurring bioactive compound found in the bark of Magnolia officinalis, a botanical that has been used for centuries in traditional European, Chinese, Korean and Japanese practices.

Honokiol has attracted considerable scientific interest over the past decades and is now investigated as an individual compound rather than simply as part of a traditional Magnolia bark extract.

One of the reasons Honokiol has become particularly interesting scientifically is its role in mitochondrial and longevity research. Honokiol has been studied in connection with SIRT3 (Sirtuin 3), a mitochondrial sirtuin that is an important focus of research into mitochondrial function, cellular metabolism and biological aging. Beyond this area, Honokiol has also been extensively investigated in a wide range of scientific fields, including cellular signalling, oxidative and metabolic pathways. While the academic and clinical findings related to its potential are numerous (more than 1200 published studies listed on PubMed) and many are often outstanding, supporting its traditional use, inline with the European regulation, these findings cannot be addressed here.

These areas of research are among the main reasons why MCS Formulas chose to focus specifically on Honokiol itself rather than on a general Magnolia bark extract.

The scientific research mentioned above should not be interpreted as evidence that Honokiol prevents, treats or cures disease, and no such claims are made for this food supplement.

2. Honokiol Pure. Not Honokiol + Magnolol

Honokiol and Magnolol are two different naturally occurring compounds found in Magnolia bark. Although closely related, they are distinct molecules and are investigated separately in scientific research.

Many commercial Magnolia extracts are standardized to the combined amount of Honokiol + Magnolol. This means that a product described, for example, as “90% Honokiol + Magnolol” does not necessarily contain 90% Honokiol. The actual amount of Honokiol may be considerably lower and may not be separately standardized.

This distinction is particularly important because Honokiol is naturally present in Magnolia bark in much lower amounts than Magnolol in many raw materials, making highly purified Honokiol substantially more difficult and expensive to produce.

MCS Formulas therefore chose not to use a conventional and low cost combined Magnolia extract. Our ingredient is specifically standardized to >98% Honokiol. This means the stated purity refers specifically to Honokiol itself, rather than to the combined concentration of Honokiol and Magnolol.

For us, this provides a much more precisely defined ingredient and ensures that the amount of the compound we specifically selected, Honokiol, is clearly known.
