Honokiol is a less known food supplement but with wonderful potential. It is a natural extract from Magnolia bark, used for centuries in traditional medicine in China, Korea, and Japan, due to its perfect combination of bioavailability and ability to support the body through a wide range of mechanisms, often reflected in the scientific research performed on Honokiol, during the past decades (1).

In line with the recent findings, it is now believed that Magnolia extract:

• Helps maintaining mobility and flexibility of joints [EFSA ID 3429];
• Contribute to the resistance during the premenstrual cycle. Contributes to relieve the menopause symptoms [EFSA ID 3429];
• Contributes to the normal function of the intestinal tract [EFSA ID 3430].

Next to these, a search in the medical journal database (PubMED) relevels that up to date, more than 2000 research papers have been published, addressing academic research on Honokiol in connection with various health challenges (1). One of the most researched aspect of Honokiol is related to it’s impact on cancer cell lines (2).

Another intensively research area connects Honokiol and neuro-activity (3). This type of research resonates indeed with the fact that Honokiol is also a component of the Chinese herb houpo, which is found in a traditional Chinese medicine formula used in China to promote relaxation and a sense of calm (4).

We at MCS Formulas, believe that one of the most relevant and little known aspect behind Honokiol is related to it’s potential to promote the stability of important Omega-3 and DHA metabolites in the blood.
