Lycopene has been first discovered in tomato, in 1876, and it is often known because of its health benefits. It is the red colored pigment found in large amounts in red colored fruits and vegetables such as tomato, watermelon, pink grapefruits, papaya, and apricot.

During the past decades, Lycopene became one of the most known and researched carotenoid. Today, there are more than 5000 research articles published by the academic world, underlining the potential behind Lycopene. And the numbers of the research articles increase every year (2).

One of the major mechanism behind the positive impact of Lycopene on life, seems to be related not to its antioxidant properties but possibly mevalonate pathway modulation, leading to unexpected relevant results in some clinical trials (3).

Regardless of what are the mechanisms, clinical trials performed during the past decades indicate that Lycopene is one of the outstanding plant extracts that is best to consider having in our diet. And that is not difficult, since it comes in good amounts in specific vegetables and fruits. However, in order to maximize the intake, adding extra Lycopene via food supplements is one relevant option.
