Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA) is a derivative of citric acid. It comes from the fruit Garcinia Cambogia that grows in the rainforests of Southeast Asia and South America. Garcinia has been used for centuries in Asian countries for culinary purposes in place of lemon. It has a characteristic sweet and sour taste. Aside from its use as a condiment in cuisine, Garcinia has been used in the traditional Ayurvedic medicine to address various health challenges (1).

One of the main mechanism behind its use in the traditional medicine is believed to be related to its capability to inhibit ATP citrate lyase (ACLY), an enzyme that represents an important step in fatty acids and cholesterol biosynthesis inside cells (2) (ID 2651).

In line with the traditional use of HCA and the recent research, it is believed that HCA may have some of the following properties:

• Supports the fat metabolism (ID 2651).
• Helps with weight management (ID 2057)
• Reduces appetite (ID 2057)
