Boswellia extract comes from an oleo-gum resin known as ‘incense’ and called Frankincense, produced by a tree called Boswellia Serrata that grows in dry mountainous regions of India, Northern Africa and the Middle East. Frankincense has a rich history, as it has been traded in the Arabian area for more than 6,000 years; Southern Arabia a major exporter of frankincense in antiquity. Due to its special properties, the Egyptians used Frankincense to purify body cavities in the mummification procedure. In addition, Frankincense was one of the gifts offered to Jesus by the biblical magi. Boswellia Serrata is one of the oldest and most valued herbs in Ayurveda, used for centuries in Asian and African folk medicine (1).

Recent scientific investigations indicate that one of the most relevant component of Boswellia Serrata resin is the group of pentacyclic triterpenic acids called Boswellic Acids. This is because Boswellic Acids were found to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory enzyme, 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), cathepsin G, and microsomal prostaglandin-E synthase (1, 2).
