Berberine is a dietary supplement, the principal bioactive ingredient various plants such as Berberis vulgaris (barberry) and Phellodendron amurense (Amur cork tree) and in common traditional Chinese medicinal herbs (also named ‘Huang Lian’ in Chinese) traditionally used to address various metabolic and inflammatory disorders (1). It comes from the roots, stems, and bark of various plants. According to inscriptions found on clay tablets in the library of the Assyrian Emperor Ashurbanipal, one of the earliest use of Berberine containing fruits goes back to 650 BCE. These tablets refer to the blood purifying effects of Berberine containing fruits. In Ayurvedic medicine, Berberine was used to address infections and ‘open the mind’. The plant use in Chinese medicine dates back over 3000 years, and it’s use in the European countries has a similarly long history.

Today, Berberine is widely used in Asian countries (mainly in China) due to its good clinical and safety profile. In US, FDA considers Berberine safe for human use (2).

In line with the traditional use and the recent findings, currently Berberine is considered:

• Good for heart and blood vessels*
